Healthy Dog Treats

Updated: Oct 17, 2019

I love making dog treat recipes, especially when I know that our dogs are going to reap the benefits of my time with a healthy snack that cost me pennies to make.

The following recipes contain healthy fats, B vitamins, as well as potassium, calcium, copper, iron, manganese, and other minerals. They are super-fast to make, only take about 20 minutes, which is faster than I can drive to the store, and I know what is in them! It is such a win-win! I like to freeze these treats for teething puppies; not only do they feel good on their gums, it keeps them busy for a long time. Our big dogs also love them, and the extra vitamins and minerals are super for their overall health.

Now be careful not to overdue the benefits and overload your dogs with calories, which will make them fat. These are treats and should be given once in a while.

Healthy Peanut Butter Maple Treats

  • One-fourth cup of water

  • One-fourth cup of ground flax-seed

  • One-third of a cup of peanut butter

  • One tablespoon of maple syrup

Directions

Preheat your oven to 350°, line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

Mix the ground flax-seed with water.

Next, add the peanut butter and maple syrup to the flax mixture.

Drop by the spoonful on a cookie sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes. This recipe makes 12 cookies 60 calories each.

Your dogs will love them.

My next healthy recipe is so easy you will love it. Time-wise, it takes a little longer in the oven but makes a great grain-free, dairy-free snack. The first time I made them, my kids didn't know they were for the dogs and had them half eaten before I caught them! These chews are an excellent source of beta carotene, vitamin C, potassium, manganese, vitamins B5 and B6, and vitamin E.

A sweet potato is 24 calories per ounce, so the number of calories will depend on the size of your potato. A perfect snack for a dog with weight management problems.

Sweet Potato Chews

  • Two large sweet potatoes

  • Honey

Directions

Preheat oven to 250. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

Using a sharp knife, cut the sweet potato lengthwise into 1/4" slices, brush with honey. Bake for 2 hours or until chewy shut your oven off and leave the sweet potato in until cool. Store in an airtight container.
